Pairs Well With…Blue Sky Black Death, Nacho Picasso, every electronic artist he’s paired with so far

Charlotte North Carolina Rapper Deniro Farrar has a deep baritone voice that pairs perfectly with the chilled out electronic production he raps over. His smooth flow stands out on his storytelling tracks. His flow is subtle, almost underwhelming at first but upon closer listening it fits perfectly with each producer he’s paired with. He has released a number of slick videos recently that feature rich verbal and visual imagery. He’s one of the most focused rappers I’ve been turned onto through this year’s reviews. It will be interesting to see if his almost quiet flow is overtaken by the dynamic beats he raps over in a live setting.

Deniro Farrar Drops THE PATRIARCH, his latest mixtape. With production from Kira, Sxmplelife, Keyboard Kid, FRIENDZONE, Young Citizen, Michael and Joseph Pepe on In Silence Productions, BK Beats, Different Sleep, Ryan Hemsworth, K20, Black Noi$e, and Flosstradamus you know you’re in for a jaunty ride. The only vocal contribution from anyone other than Deniro is out of Meghan Tartamella.

We’ve heard a few of these tracks before (‘So Many Days’, ‘Fears’, ‘Back/Forth/Back’, ‘Kill Your Idol’, and ‘Look At The Sky’), but this particular combination of 15 tracks solidifies the idea behind Deniro’s #CULTRAP. A cult leader has to make themselves into demigods, at least. They need to convince their flock that their word(s) is (are) infallible, handed down from a higher power. Deniro achieves this in two ways: 1) he uses staunchly uncluttered, vaporous (uplifting) beats, and 2) he rarely uses anything but general proverbs when telling his stories, so he could be speaking for any of us.

But it isn’t just as simple as using “he”, “she”, “him”, etc., though. Deniro makes an effort to tell actual stories, sometimes realistic fiction, others are real themselves. No line is devoid of meaning. Every bar represents an experience, a love lost, an opportunity missed, a goal unmeasured. Every story is about Deniro, or comes from Deniro’s experience. It’s also relevant that Deniro’s voice is the only one heard on every track. He doesn’t need anyone to help him tell stories and reach his audience. Deniro’s paranoia, cold (late) nights, and fallen family choke the tales on this tape until the very end. And then, suddenly, he closes with “Look At The Sky”, one of the most emotionally-charged tracks anyone has ever opened. I’m not even gonna lie, I get choked up when I hear Deniro over Floss’ beat.

These steadily upward-moving ideas (told over the spatially-fashioned beats created by the great minds I mentioned above) storied by Deniro, elevate him to a position of authority by the end of the tape. We watch his entire life and death and rebirth in the space of 15 tracks, 49.9 minutes, 87.9 MB. The leader of our cult has seen it all, and he speaks for each and every one of us who has no voice. Bow down to the Patriarch.
